US Officials told the Wall Street Journal that Trump is privately confessing he could abandon any nuclear agreement with Iran as he pushes for a way out of the war.
Trump has told senior aides that he could accept a deal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz without achieving the purported central motive of the “excursion” in Iran — that Iran could develop a nuclear weapon.
Trump is now arguing privately that Iran is not likely capable of rebuilding their nuclear program during his presidency.
After the US destroyed three nuclear sites last year, Trump now claims that US intelligence would detect any efforts by Iran to rebuild or develop a bomb.
Trump also thinks he could threaten Tehran with more bombings to deter further development.
Instead, Iran has reacted with its own sweeping demands for reopening the strait.
Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, said Washington would have to permanently end the war, withdraw US forces, lift sanctions and the naval blockade, release frozen Iranian assets and pay war reparations, according to Iranian state media.
