Is There a Summer COVID Surge? With Cases Rising in Nearly Every State, Watch for These Symptoms
As summer winds down, COVID-19 activity is increasing nationwide. Here’s where cases are the highest and how to protect yourself.
Although foodborne pathogens have been in the spotlight all summer, another highly contagious virus is surging in the United States: coronavirus. A new wave of COVID-19 is sweeping the country, with cases on the rise in nearly every state.
As of Aug. 19, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that COVID infections are growing or likely growing in 48 states and declining in zero states.
COVID-19 activity is still considered low, nationally, the CDC says. However, rates are increasing quickly across the country, especially in the South and West.
Texas is currently reporting the highest levels of COVID in wastewater of any state, per CDC data.
Current Epidemic Trends (Based on Rt)
As of August 26, 2026, we estimate that COVID-19 infections are growing or likely growing in 48 states, declining or likely declining in 0 states, and not changing in 2 states. Previous estimates can be found on data.cdc.gov.
Epidemic trend is estimated at the national, state, and health service area (HSA) levels for the United States. HSA is a geographic area that combines one or more contiguous counties to form a region that is relatively self-contained with respect to hospital care. The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), which is part of Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), was originally responsible for defining HSAs. The HSA’s shown here align with state boundaries. More information on HSAs is available here.
