Trump is set to attend the U.S. Open on Sunday for the men’s final championship match between second-seeded Carlos Alcaraz, a 22-year-old Spaniard, and No. 1 seed and defending champion Jannik Sinner, 24, of Italy.
Any negative reactions to his presence will be censored on ABC’s national telecast.
The USTA plans to show the Orange Ass during the national anthem, already a noisy and bombastic moment that might insulate the boos, but the association sent an e-mail asking broadcasters to censor or avoid showing any protests or booing for television audiences.
The USTA follow up statement said, “We regularly ask our broadcasters to refrain from showcasing off-court disruptions.”
Trump was once a U.S. Open mainstay, but hasn’t attended since he was loudly booed at a quarterfinals match in September 2015, months after launching his first presidential campaign.
Trump is attending the event at the invitation of Swiss watchmaker Rolex as a guest in Rolex’s private suite.
Trump has recently imposed a 39% tariff on Swiss products, 2 1/2 times greater than the tariff imposed on the European Union, and four times higher than tariffs imposed on Britain.
Rolex may be trying to curry favor for lower tariff rates, and the White House has no comment on Trump accepting a private corporate invitation.
