On Monday, Trump asked his friends at the Supreme Court to overturn the civil case that found he sexually abused and defamed E. Jean Carroll. A jury awarded Carroll a $5 million judgement. In June Trump lost an effort to have a full appeals court review the case.
Carroll sued Trump alleging he sexually assaulted her in a New York department store in the mid-1990s and defamed her when in 2019 he denied the assault, said she wasn’t his type, and claimed she made it up to boost sales of a book.
Trump claims that Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversaw the trial, made numerous errors by allowing the jury to hear testimony from two women who alleged Trump sexually assaulted them years ago.
It is yet to be seen whether the Extreme Court takes up the case.
Another defamation case involving E. Jean Carroll awarded her $83 million in damages, when Trump repeated his statements in 2022. An appeals court upheld the ruling, rejecting several of Trump’s legal challenges. The appeals court said Trump previously waived any claim of presidential immunity and said the Supreme Court’s decision last year involving criminal cases did not alter their view.
