An Air Canada flight with more than 70 passengers aboard collided with a fire truck when landing at LaGuardia Airport in New York late on Sunday, killing the pilot, co-pilot, and injuring several.
One flight attended was found still secured to her seat after being hurled far from the crash site. She survived.
Two fire truck occupants and about 40 passengers were transported to hospitals with serious injuries. Most had been released Monday morning.
The fire truck was on its way to check on another plane that had just aborted its takeoff. An air traffic controller can be heard on airport communications frantically calling for the fire truck to stop several times.
Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said LaGuardia faces a shortage of air traffic controllers.
More than one was on duty at the time of the crash, according to Duffy, saying reports of only one on duty were “inaccurate.” The FAA says that determination will be part of the NTSB’s investigation.
Aviation experts said the tower likely had fewer controllers on duty than a few hours earlier when there was more flight traffic scheduled.
