Abdul El-Sayed narrowly won the Democratic primary in Michigan by 15,000 votes with 95% of the votes counted, and will face Republican Mike Rogers in November.
The race was called Wednesday morning, and Haley Stevens has called El-Sayed to concede.
El-Sayed’s campaign against the establishment candidate focused on wins with young voters, college students, educated voters, and wealthy white voters.
Stevens owned the Black votes in Detroit and Flint, rural counties, and some communities with colleges and resorts.
Yet the biggest primary success is undoubtedly the message for pro-Israel candidates as AIPAC lost a $30 million investment in Stevens.
Another message from the race is that the polling defied the outcome.
The last eight public polls showed El-Sayed with a double digit lead, when the outcome came down to a single percentage point.
Republicans are already hitting El-Sayed hard as they will undoubtedly highlight previously unvetted material, and will label him as “the most radical candidate in America.”
