Shutdown: Congress gets paid, essential and furloughed workers don’t, and furloughed workers’ office voice mails blame Dems

From The Hill :

A government shutdown does not mean federal workers get a vacation. In fact, many essential workers must report to work, but they will not get paychecks until funding “comes through.” Meanwhile, workers who have been furloughed have found voice mail messages changed to messages in the first person saying they are not at work and it’s the Democrat’s fault.

“None of us consented to this. And it’s written in the first-person, as if I’m the one conveying this message, & I’m not. I don’t agree with it. I don’t think it’s ethical or legal. I think it violates the #HatchAct,” referring to the law imposing limits on political activity by federal employees.”

TSA agents and air traffic controllers will stay on the job, along with thousands of other essential workers, including those who keep Social Security running. Many essential employees won’t get paid until funding resumes, meaning they could miss one or more paychecks depending on how long the shutdown lasts.

Hundreds of thousands of other federal employees find themselves furloughed. But like those still working without pay, they are guaranteed back pay thanks to a 2019 law.

@rwpusa.bsky.social was quoted by @theguardian.com about possible violations of the Hatch Act, which limits the political activities of government employees. Some agencies reportedly sent emails to employees on Tues. faulting Democrats for a potential government shutdown at midnight.z.umn.edu/ar9s

Members of Congress will still collect paychecks because their salaries are considered mandatory spending and required by the Constitution. Article I, Section 6 of the Constitution states: “The Senators and Representatives shall receive a Compensation for their Services, to be ascertained by Law, and paid out of the Treasury of the United States.”

Most senators and representatives are paid $174,000 a year, a rate unchanged since 2009. The exceptions are the speaker of the House ($223,500) and the president pro tempore of the Senate and the majority and minority leaders in the House and Senate ($193,400).

"Whenever you have a government shutdown federal employees leave a voice mail saying "Hey we'll be back when the shut down is over". Well, the Trump administration forced them to leave a message that it's the democrats fault that they're not there."www.youtube.com/shorts/rkALE…

Per NPR :”Immigration cases and enforcement are proceeding as usual during the government shutdown, with a few small exceptions.  Customs inspection and immigration law enforcement are considered “essential” functions that will continue during any lapse in appropriations, though workers may not get paid until the shutdown is over.”

According to USA Today: Members of the U.S. Armed Forces will have to report to work without pay. More than two million military workers will continue to work during the government shutdown, according to a Sept. 27 contingency plan published by the “Department of War.”

THE postal Service and the Coast Guard will still get paid as their salaries come from an alternate fund. The President will still receive his salary, the salary he says he donates or refuses.
