Pulitzer Prize winner David Blight brought attention to the Blacks of Charleston, South Carolina, who along with white missionaries honored the Union soldiers who were captured by Confederates and died in unmarked graves. Freed slaves and whites together gave them a proper burial. Later, about 10,000 (mostly Blacks) paraded around the gravesites covered in flowers, singing patriotic songs. This took place on May 1, 1865.
