Virginia Supreme Court strikes down Democrats’ redistricting plan, dimming party’s midterm hopes
The Virginia Supreme Court on Friday struck down a voter-approved Democratic congressional redistricting plan, delivering another major setback to the party in a nationwide battle against Republicans for an edge in this year’s midterm elections.
The court ruled that the state’s Democratic-led legislature violated procedural requirements when it placed the constitutional amendment on the ballot to authorize the mid-decade redistricting. Voters narrowly approved the amendment April 21, but the court’s ruling renders the results of that vote meaningless.
“This violation irreparably undermines the integrity of the resulting referendum vote and renders it null and void,” the court said in its opinion.
The Economy:
U.S. payrolls jump more than expected, but the report had several red flags for the economy
- Nonfarm payrolls rose by a seasonally adjusted 115,000 in April, down from the 185,000 created in an unusually strong March, but better than the 55,000 forecast.
- The unemployment rate held at 4.3%, further proof that the labor market has reached a point where only modest job creation is needed to keep the jobless level steady.
- Average hourly earnings came in lower than expected, increasing 0.2% for the month and 3.6% on an annual basis, compared with respective estimates for 0.3% and 3.8%.
- Following recent trends, healthcare led with 37,000 new positions, though multiple other sectors also saw gains.

What is the Andes virus? The hantavirus linked to a cruise ship outbreak is among the deadliest strains
The Andes strain is the only type that’s known to spread from person to person.
The strain of hantavirus that has killed three people and sickened five others on a cruise ship is the Andes strain, which is typically found in South America including parts of Argentina, where the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius departed.
This strain is the only type that’s known to spread from person to person. As of Wednesday, there were eight cases; three have been confirmed as hantavirus by laboratory testing. Three people, a married couple who were Dutch nationals and another woman, have died. Another person is in intensive care in South Africa.
Dr. Abraar Karan, an infectious disease physician at Stanford Medicine, said the death of the woman, 69, who was on a plane just 24 hours prior to her death on April 26, “tells you how rapidly this disease can progress.”
This is a good time to remind people that the US has some of the highest covid mortality rates in the world. The “best they can” got millions killed and many more disabled. They’ve gutted the CDC. Put an anti-vaxxer in charge of HHS. Stoked eugenicist rhetoric. Hope is not a strategy.
