Extreme conservative Justice Samuel Alito revealed in a CBS interview that he is considering retirement, open to the possibility that he could leave after next year’s term and gift Donald Trump another conservative lifetime appointee to the high court.
Alito admitted, in an excerpt of an interview scheduled to be released on Monday, that he had considering leaving this year when asked if he felt pressured by Republicans to exit while they still had control of the Senate.
He shut down any notion of his retirement in August, telling the Wall Street Journal, “obviously I’m here for another term.”
Alito, 76, said his age was a factor that all justices should consider, but concluded that he “could still make a valuable contribution.” Alito is the second oldest justice on the court, behind Clarence Thomas at 78.
Alito also defended his majority opinion that struck down Roe v. Wade in 2022, admitting that he had lost old friendships over it.
