Now more than ever, children under the age of 5 are being hospitalized for COVID-19. The rates of children being admitted are the highest they’ve been since the beginning of the pandemic.
The number of children being hospitalized with COVID-19 has dramatically increased as the fast-spreading and highly contagious Omicron spreads across the country, sharply increasing the number of positive cases.
As of Tuesday, an average of 766 children and teenagers are admitted to the hospital every day because of COVID-19. Since mid-December, the hospitalization rates of children under 5 years old have increased from 2.5 per 100,000 to four per 100,000.
A new CDC study finds:
Children who have recovered from Covid-19 appear to be at significantly increased risk of developing Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, researchers at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Friday.
A heightened risk of diabetes has already been seen among adults who recovered from Covid, according to some studies.

Many Americans have been waiting in long lines at free testing sites since before the Christmas and New Year’s holiday rush. Plenty of others are avoiding the lines and paying $20 or more for over-the-counter, at-home tests — if they can find one.
Out of options, some have headed to crowded emergency rooms.
“The current demand for testing far exceeds the testing resources that are available,” said Michael T. Osterholm, an epidemiologist and director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota.
