The Democratic nominee for President said during Thursday’s unscripted interview on CNN that, if elected, she would appoint a Republican to her Cabinet.
“I have spent my career inviting diversity of opinion. I think it’s important to have people at the table when some of the most important decisions are being made that have different views, different experiences,” Harris said. “And I think it would be to the benefit of the American public to have a member of my Cabinet who was a Republican.”
The Harris campaign has made efforts to reach out to disaffected Republicans who are not willing to vote for Trump, and welcomed Republicans to speak at the Democratic National Convention, including Adam Kinzinger, Geoff Duncan, and Stephanie Grisham.
There is a long history of presidents appointing members of the opposite party to their Cabinet, but neither Trump or Biden reached out to the opposing party for consideration.
President Barack Obama appointed Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Ill.) as transportation secretary and Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-Neb.) as defense secretary. Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, tapped former congressman Norm Mineta (D-Calif.) to serve as his transportation secretary.
