A gunman, identified as Maurice Hill, 36 — a Philadelphia man with a lengthy history of gun convictions and of resisting attempts to bring him to justice, surrendered around midnight Thursday, ending a dramatic standoff in which two officers were trapped for several hours in a rowhouse and six responding officers were shot. The shootout erupted at 4:30 p.m. when officers attempted to serve a warrant to the address.

Prior to the gunman’s surrender, the two officers inside the house were evacuated by SWAT without injury.

At a news conference just before 10 p.m., Police Commissioner Ross praised the bravery of officers who responded to the scene of the gunfire and called SWAT’s work that got the officers out of the house “absolutely remarkable.”
