Hepatitis A outbreak spreads to 25 counties in Alabama

Food service workers urged to get vaccinated in 25 of 67 counties

All food service workers in Alabama are being urged to get vaccinated as the Hepatitis A outbreak in Alabama has spread to 25 counties.

The Alabama Department of Public Health said there are 132 confirmed outbreak-related cases in the state. Multiple confirmed cases have been reported among food workers.

The current Hepatitis A outbreak started in northeast Alabama in September 2018 and spread throughout the state. Thirty cases of Hepatitis A were reported in July of this year, the highest number of monthly cases since the outbreak began. Most of the cases are concentrated in DeKalb and Jackson counties though the virus has been confirmed as far south as Baldwin and Houston counties.
