John Kirby, the chief Pentagon spokesman, told reporters that Navy Rear Adm. Peter Vasely is communicating with Taliban commanders in an effort to further accelerate the pace of the evacuation. Kirby says that so far 2,000 people, including 325 American citizens, have been removed by U.S. Air Force C-17 transport planes. The administratin is also weighing options for removing an array of military equipment, weapons and aircraft that have fallen into the hands of the Taliban or other militant groups around Afghanistan.
