WASHINGTON — An Ohio pastor who wore his company jacket as he pushed against a police line on Jan. 6, 2021, was arrested by the FBI on Wednesday and charged with felony and misdemeanor charges, the Justice Department said.
William Dunfee, 57, a church pastor, is the man seen on video recorded by another Jan. 6 rioter telling officers that the mob was going to take over the U.S. Capitol steps; online sleuths identified him before his arrest this week. Dunfee also told other rioters that they were “taking our house,” according to an FBI affidavit.
“This election has been stolen right out from underneath of our noses and it is time for the American people to rise up. Rise up. Rise up. Today is the day in which it is that these elected officials realize that we are no longer playing games,” Dunfee told other rioters, according to the affidavit and the video. “We will stand up for our country. We are standing up for our freedoms. We are standing up for our president. And today is the day these elected officials, these senators and these congressmen, understand that we are not going to allow this to continue any longer.”
The preacher said that “elected officials need to fear us.”
The criminal complaint filed with the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia indicates that William Dunfee is charged with:
- Civil disorder
- Obstruction of an official proceeding
- Entering and remaining in a restricted building or grounds
- Disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds
- Engaging in physical violence in a restricted building or grounds
- Disorderly conduct in a Capitol building
- Act of physical violence in the Capitol grounds or buildings
According to the federal documents, the FBI began investigating Dunfee in February 2021 after a tipster provided screenshots of comments from a Facebook group claiming that the Warsaw, Ohio pastor at New Beginnings Ministries was “leading the way” into the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.
“Pastor Bill and several others of our group made into the interior doors of the Capital. They pushed back and forth with the police. They talked to the officers and told them why they were there. Not to harm or destroy. They wanted to talk to the Congress. When an officer came back and said that wasn’t possible, they tried to force the doors open. They were pepper sprayed and were stopped.”
