No, MAGAts, the FDA Did Not Approve Ivermectin for Treating COVID-19

Obviously, the use of ivermectin to treat the Trump Virus COVID-19 still remains open for debate, especially in MAGAt world. But in the real world where facts are facts, study after study has shown: “Ivermectin does not meaningfully improve the recovery of people with mild to moderate Covid. A previous study found that ivermectin does not lower the risk of hospitalization from Covid.” And….“The FDA has warned people against taking the tablets for anything other than their approved use.

But, here we are today, debating the same issue, a DEAD HORSE issue, because just recently, RW shitholes have claimed ” the FDA Recently ‘Admit’ That Doctors Can Prescribe Ivermectin For COVID-19.” No, the FDA did not.

In mid-August 2023, several social media accounts and fringe news outlets began posting the claim that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had recently “admitted” that doctors were now allowed to prescribe ivermectin  — the anti-parasitic drug briefly considered to be a possible treatment during the coronavirus pandemic — for COVID-19.

First and foremost, the FDA’S role is to APPROVE drugs, not monitor nor regulate what doctors can and cannot prescribe. “…the FDA has never had the authority to prevent doctors from prescribing FDA-approved drugs like ivermectin for off-label uses. The FDA regulates how manufacturers of drugs can advertise and label their drugs to the public and to doctors, but that authority does not extend to regulating how doctors prescribe these medications.”

Who ran with this claim and blasted it all over the interwebz?

  • Epoch Times (China Times): “Doctors Can Prescribe Ivermectin for COVID-19: FDA Lawyer” was published on Aug. 10. The article quoted an attorney representing the FDA and other federal health agencies who were being sued by a group of private doctors.” Who were the doctors in this case who filed suit against the FDA and other agencies? Several doctors affiliated with America’s Frontline Doctors – a group that has been connected to medical misinformation.
  • Gateway Pundit  (Gateway Repugnant):

***The morons lost their bigly lawsuit late last year but oral arguments for the appellate case began on Aug. 8, 2023.

  • Fox “News”
  • Shitholes that parrot the nonsense they gleaned from fringe (fake) ‘news’ sites and fellow science denying MAGAts:
  • So far, anti-vaxxer and Democratic presidential hopeful, Robert Kennedy Jr, has kept his mouth shut.

This was the original tweet the FDA posted two years ago telling morons to stop using ivermectin to treat COVID-19. Notice, NOWHERE in the tweet or in the FDA’s guidance document does it state that doctors are prohibited from prescribing this DO NOTHING TO CURE COVID-19 drug.

Because the FDA never had — or even asserted that it had — the authority to block off-label use of FDA-approved drugs, and because the FDA had repeatedly reaffirmed that fact throughout the pandemic, claims that a new policy shift occurred in August 2023 regarding the prescribing of ivermectin for COVID-19 were false.

***And for those who would like more information on what is and what is not approved to treat COVID-19, we have the resources right here. And….they’re from credible sources, not far right , fringe ‘news’ sources or science denying MAGAts that don’t have a clue and who can get you killed.

The Food & Drug Administration (FDA) maintains a list of FDA-approved COVID-19 therapeutic treatments. The website, which is updated whenever a drug is approved for use to treat the coronavirus, was last revised on May 25, 2023.

Ivermectin is not on that list as an approved method of treatment. A spokesperson with the FDA also confirmed to VERIFY via email that ivermectin is still not an approved drug to treat the coronavirus.

This is a list of approved drugs to treat COVID-19:

  • Actemra (Tocilizumab) is approved for the treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized adults who are receiving systemic steroids and require supplemental oxygen, non-invasive or invasive mechanical ventilation, or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
  • Veklury (Remdesivir) is approved for the treatment of COVID-19 in adults and pediatric patients (28 days of age and older and weighing at least 3 kilograms) who are: hospitalized, or not hospitalized and have mild-to-moderate COVID-19 and are at high risk for progression to severe COVID-19, including hospitalization or death.
  • Olumiant (baricitinib) is approved for the treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalized adults requiring supplemental oxygen, non-invasive or invasive mechanical ventilation, or ECMO.
  • Paxlovid (nirmatrelvir and ritonavir) is approved for the treatment of mild-to-moderate COVID-19 in adults who are at high risk for progression to severe COVID 19, including hospitalization or death. Paxlovid is not approved for use as pre-exposure or post-exposure prophylaxis for prevention of COVID-19.

The FDA has only approved ivermectin for humans to treat infections caused by some parasitic worms and head lice, and skin conditions like rosacea, not COVID-19, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Some forms of ivermectin are approved to prevent heartworm disease and treat certain internal and external parasites in animals.

The Department of Health and Human Services also has a list of approved COVID-19 treatments here
