President Biden on Thursday commemorated the 80th anniversary of D-Day, the invasion of Normandy that liberated Europeans from Nazis, alongside French President Emmanuel Macron.
Dozens of World War II veterans made the trek to France as well, where Biden told them, “On behalf of the American people and as commander in chief, it’s the highest honor to be able to salute you here in Normandy.”
Biden linked the historic battle with the contemporary struggle Ukraine is continuing to endure. President Zelensky also attended.
“The autocrats of the world are watching closely to see what happens in Ukraine, to see if we let this illegal aggression go unchecked. We cannot let that happen.”
