The youngest son of the late Sen. John McCain, who registered as a Democrat only weeks ago, announced he was voting for Kamala Harris for President, speaking out because of how Trump behaved at Arlington National Cemetery.
After years as a registered independent, 1st Lt. Jimmy McCain, who has served in the military for 17 years, says he registered as a Democrat several weeks ago, plans to vote for Harris, and says he “would get involved in any way I could” to help her campaign.
McCain said Harris and Walz “embody a group of people that will help make this country better, that will take us forward.”
Neither Cindy McCain, who voted for Biden in 2020, nor daughter Meghan, have publicly abandoned the Republican Party.
The younger McCain enlisted in the Marine Corps at age 17 and now serves as an intelligence officer in the 158th Infantry Regiment.
Jimmy has said that the Arlington episode and how the campaign has reacted to it represents a whole new level of what he perceives as Trump’s disrespect for the fallen. And he believes it stems from Trump’s own insecurities about not having served.
“It just blows me away,” McCain told CNN. “These men and women that are laying in the ground there have no choice” of whether to be a backdrop for a political campaign, he said. “I just think that for anyone who’s done a lot of time in their uniform, they just understand that inherently — that it’s not about you there. It’s about these people who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the name of their country.”
Trump is not the first politician to violate a ban on political activity at Arlington. In fact, more than 20 years ago, John McCain said he made “a very bad mistake” when he released a campaign ad that featured a clip of him walking through the cemetery.
Trump, however, has issued no apologies for ignoring and “pushing aside” a cemetery official, and published footage of the violation in a campaign ad anyway.
