The general manager of the United States’ 4 Nations Face-Off hockey team is calling for Trump to attend Thursday’s USA-Canada championship game in Boston, calling the booing of the US national anthem “inspirational.”
Bill Guerin, who played 18 years in the NHL, said tRump’s attendance would boost the rivalry between the two teams, where political tensions may have inspired three fights within the first nine seconds of the last meeting of the two powerhouse teams on Saturday. The US team prevailed over Canada 3-1.
“Canada-U.S. is a huge rivalry in hockey,” Guerin said. “You know, I think there was a little bit of a political flare to it, it’s just the time that we’re in.”
On Saturday’s match up, Canadian hockey fans loudly booed during the playing of the US anthem, as they did previously in the preliminary round.
Canadian coach Jon Cooper has hinted that he disapproved of Canadian fans booing the anthem.
“I think people have their personal feelings and, sometimes, it gets mushed together when you bring politics into sports,” Cooper said. “To me, you’re clouding two issues and I just think everybody should come here and cheer for the great game and leave that part out of it, because I’d like the same for us when we go to other countries, as well.”
Meanwhile, tRump has continued to refer to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as Governor Trudeau, as he threatens tariffs on Canada.
