Nope, Biden Did Not Spend Millions To Make Mice Transgender

It was another “eating the pets” moment designed to go viral, but this time Moron 47 insisted in his Congressional rally that the Biden administration spent $8 million making mice transgender.

In their desperate attempt to erase DEI and LGBTQ+ from the government, it’s likely a DOGE search for “sex” or “trans” uncovered research that used transgenic mice. Transgenic is not transgender.

The National Human Genome Research Institute (NHGRI) defines transgenic as “an organism or cell whose genome has been altered by the introduction of one or more foreign DNA sequences from another species by artificial means. Transgenic organisms are generated in the laboratory for research purposes.”

In simpler terms, a transgenic mouse is one that has had its genome altered for the purpose of studying gene functions, and for genetic engineering tests.

After being fact-checked and ridiculed for confusing transgender with transgenic, the Trump administration submitted a press release with the attempt to double down on their claims. They also used the opportunity to call the “fake news” losers, and claim Trump was always (as usual) right.

Trump’s claim seems to focus on research papers, one of which received $3 million funding and examined how “sex-specific inflammatory mechanisms controlled by hormones” might contribute to asthma. Another study, which received $1.2 million, used transgenic – not transgender – mice.

Other projects included a $2.5 million fertility study and a $300,000 analysis of breast cancer risks for trans men, which used mice in clinical tests.

  • Last month Nancy Mace, in a watchdog hearing on stopping government testing on lab animals, claimed a watchdog report found that more than $10 million in taxpayer funds had been “wasted to create transgender mice, rats, and monkeys in university labs.”
  • The title of Mace’s hearing was “Transgender Lab Rats and Poisoned Puppies: Oversight of Taxpayer Funded Animal Cruelty.”
  • That report included various studies on the effects of hormone therapy for treatment in humans. Truly, the goal was not to make lab mice transgender, but to study the effects for humans.
