In a House Foreign Relations Subcommittee hearing on Tuesday, Texas (R) Rep. Keith Self, chairman of the committee, abruptly adjourned the meeting when the Democratic ranking member challenged him for referring to Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride, a transgender woman, as “Mr. McBride.”
McBride, who has taken the repeated personal attacks from Republicans in stride and with grace, responded to the Chairman, “Thank you, Madam Chair,” before proceeding with her remarks.
But Rep. William Keating (D) of Massachusetts was not having any of it. He asked Chairman Self to repeat his introduction. Self repeated the misgender.
“Have you no decency?” Keating said. “I’ve come to know you a little bit, but this is not decent.”
Watch below:
Following the adjournment of the hearing, Self posted to X, “It is the policy of the United States to recognize two sexes, male and female.”
Rep. Nancy Mace, who sponsored a bill that would only allow biological women in women’s bathrooms, piped up on X as well.

Illinois Republican Rep. Mary Miller, who addressed McBride on the House floor last month as “the gentleman from Delaware” also added her two cents.

In the past, Rep. McBride has called the attacks from Republicans a distraction from important issues such housing, health care and child care.
On Tuesday following the clash, Rep. McBride told Politico, “Extremists in the House are hoping people don’t take notice that they voted to slash funding for farmers today.” The Congresswoman also posted to X.
