According to a video posted by El Salvador President Nayib Bukele’s office on X, Trump is seeking to send “homegrown” U.S. citizens to Salvadoran prisons.
“Homegrown criminals next,” Trump said, according to a livestream posted by Bukele’s office. “I said homegrowns are next, the homegrowns. You gotta build about five more places.”
Bukele agreed, and others in the room laughed.
Legal experts say the idea is flatly unconstitutional, but Trump has AG Pam Blondi looking into it.
During an interview with Bondi on Fox News’s Jesse Watters Primetime, Watters asked, “The president was musing about sending some of the most horrible people in this country down to that mega-prison. You know, people that push ladies into subways and hit old ladies with baseball bats to the head. Is that legal to do? Is that something you’re allowed to do?”
Bondi danced around the answer.
