Wednesday night, the House of Representatives passed the Protecting Our Kids Act, a sweeping gun safety package that will undoubtedly die in the US Senate. It passed mostly along party lines (223-204) with a few Republicans crossing over the aisle to vote with their Democratic colleagues and a few members of the Democratic Party who voted against it.
The House passed the provisions separately in an attempt to pressure Republicans while trying to satisfy moderate House Democrats.
Here’s what’s included:
- Raise the age for purchasing semi-automatic rifles from 18 to 21
- Prevent gun trafficking
- Require that all firearms be traceable
