DATELINE PICKENS COUNTY GEORGIA:
Sheriff Donnie Craig was in the Jasper Walmart, backup piece “secured in the waistband”, he was not touching it or nothing when it inexplicably fired! The bullet hit the floor.
The sheriff and several deputies were attending a “Shop with the Sheriff” holiday event at the store when the gun discharged, according to sheriff’s spokesman Capt. Kris Stancil. The sheriff and the deputies were near the front of the store.
A 15-year-old boy reported a minor injury following the incident, Stancil confirmed to AJC.com on Wednesday. The teen was standing in the checkout line within the radius of the weapon when it discharged, he said.
Sheriff Craig said he was thankful no one was seriously injured.
Pickens County is investigating.
