A Trump HHS appointee urged officials to adopt a herd immunity approach to allow millions of Americans to be infected with COVID-19.
Science advisor Paul Alexander was a HHS assistant secretary of public affairs to Michael Caputo and six others. Officials said that when Alexander spoke he was speaking for Caputo, who was appointed by Trump in April, and therefore also speaking for the White House.
“There is no other way, we need to establish herd, and it only comes about allowing the non-high risk groups expose themselves to the virus. PERIOD,” Alexander said in a July 4 e-mail to Caputo.
“Infants, kids, teens, young people, young adults, middle aged with no conditions etc. have zero to little risk….so we use them to develop herd…we want them infected…”
Caputo subsequently asked Alexander to research the idea, according to emails obtained by the House Oversight Committee on coronavirus.
