Florida Man’s Funeral Turns Into Vaccination Event

Florida Man Marquis Davis, 28, died from COVID-19 on July 26.

He was a husband and father of an 8-year-old boy, as well as a caretaker of his four nephews and one niece.

While being hooked up to a ventilator, he regretted his decision to be unvaccinated, and told his wife he was going to get the shot when he recovered. After six days in the hospital, he died.

Charnese Davis said their church, Faith Temple Christian Center in Rockledge, approached her about offering the vaccine and COVID-19 testing at his wake and memorial. She was immediately on board.

The church partnered with the state to provide both the Pfizer and the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, as well as a testing service to find out if anyone was positive.

As the delta variant roars through Florida, Marquis was one of 108 deaths reported during the week of July 23- July 29. The positivity rate during that week was 18.1% according to Florida state data. As of Saturday August 7, about 50.6% of eligible Floridians are fully vaccinated according to Johns Hopkins data.
