RUTHERFORD COUNTY, Tenn. (WKRN) – Three schools in Tennessee were on lockdown Wednesday while officers investigated an incident of shots being fired nearby. The cause of the gunfire? An expectant father fired a weapon during a gender reveal phone call, officials said.
According to police, the soon-to-be father was calling relatives to reveal the gender of his child. The man then stepped outside and fired celebratory rounds into the air and the expectant mother screamed – apparently out of excitement.
A neighbor heard the shots and the scream and called 911. Because the shots were reported so close to several schools, they were briefly put on lockdown.
The soon-to-be father was cited for unlawful discharging of a firearm inside city limits..
In the last several months some gender reveal parties have gone wrong.
◾️In 2017 an explosion caused the 47,000 acre Sawmill fire in Arizona.
◾️In 2020 a pyrotechnic device used during a gender reveal party caused the El Dorado fire in Souther California that burned 23,000 acres and killed a firefighter.
◾️In 2019 in Iowa a pipe bomb exploded killing a grandmother.
◾️Earlier this year in Michigan, a cannon blew up killing a man.
◾️Also this year in Liberty NY a man assembling a device for his child’s gender-reveal party was killed and his brother injured when the devise exploded.
