THE THIN BLUE LINE

Two Phoenix patrol units were driving near 19th and Glendale avenues around 6:45 p.m. when their cars were struck by unknown items causing damage, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release.

The officers pulled over to discuss what happened when they saw a man identified as 34-year-old Ali Osman throwing rocks at their patrol cars.

Officers tried to contact Osman and gave commands to stop throwing rocks. When Osman did not stop throwing rocks an officer shot his weapon. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died, authorities said.

Phoenix police are investigating themselves.
