Liveblog - Weekend Wrap Up: February 26, 2023

With so much going on in our world, we sometimes miss important issues. Please feel free to share any headlines or new developments we may have missed providing they come from reliable and credible sources.  In other words, please do not post any missed headlines form far right ‘news’ sources or regurgitate their Russian propaganda unless you’re trying to point out that the far-right extremist in our country and elsewhere actually believe their own BS or Russian disinformation.   We also ask that you provide a link to your source so folks can read it if they want. Please do not make any claims that you cannot factually validate or verify.

Trump Train Updates:

How MAGA Republicans’ race-baiting in Ohio recalls their ‘poor white victim strategy of 2016’: journalist

But while the left has been addressing the East Palestine disaster from an environmental standpoint and a corporate responsibility standpoint, far-right MAGA Republicans — from Fox News’ Tucker Carlson to former President Donald Trump — have favored very different messaging. Trump and Carlson have accused Democrats, including the Biden Administration and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, of being indifferent to the tragedy because its victims are mostly white, Republican and conservative. Those MAGA Republicans have framed East Palestine as a white grievance issue.

“As residents of East Palestine, Ohio struggle to pick up the pieces after a freight train carrying hazardous chemicals was derailed there nearly two weeks ago,” Bero observes, “right-wing media has seized on this moment to launch baseless conspiracies about why the government’s response has been so poor…. It’s the kind of political rabble-rousing that’s become typical in the aftermath of any American disaster. But the race and class-baiting happening here is also eerily reminiscent of the Republican Party’s poor-white-victim strategy of 2016.”

Bero continues, “Back then, conservative dog-whistling about how white people in red states are pariahs in their own country who need to beef up their political muscle in order to ensure their own survival was a tactic that helped Trump win a presidential election. And I’m ruefully reminded of that period as I watch him and his supporters take advantage of East Palestine the same way.”

Revealed: the US is averaging one chemical accident every two days

Guardian analysis of data in light of Ohio train derailment shows accidental releases are happening consistently

Mike DeWine, the Ohio governor, recently lamented the toll taken on the residents of East Palestine after the toxic train derailment there, saying “no other community should have to go through this”.

But such accidents are happening with striking regularity. A Guardian analysis of data collected by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and by non-profit groups that track chemical accidents in the US shows that accidental releases – be they through train derailments, truck crashes, pipeline ruptures or industrial plant leaks and spills – are happening consistently across the country.

By one estimate these incidents are occurring, on average, every two days.

“These kinds of hidden disasters happen far too frequently,” Mathy Stanislaus, who served as assistant administrator of the EPA’s office of land and emergency management during the Obama administration, told the Guardian. Stanislaus led programs focused on the cleanup of contaminated hazardous waste sites, chemical plant safety, oil spill prevention and emergency response.

President Biden/Biden Administration:

It’s Somewhat Official:

‘My intention is … to run,’ Biden tells ABC’s Muir on reelection decision

“It’s legitimate for people to raise questions about my age,” he said.

President Joe Biden on Friday reiterated his intention to seek a second term in an exclusive interview with ABC News anchor David Muir, and while he said it is “legitimate” for people to raise questions about his age, he said it is not part of his calculation on whether to seek reelection.

While Biden once again said he intends to run, he also hinted that the announcement could be a ways off.

“[M]y intention is — from– has — intention has been from the beginning to run. But there’s too many other things we have to finish in the near term before I start a campaign,” he told Muir at the White House.

The AP Interview: Biden ready to run, US first lady says

U.S. first lady Jill Biden gave one of the clearest indications yet that President Joe Biden will run for a second term, telling The Associated Press in an exclusive interview on Friday that there’s “pretty much” nothing left to do but figure out the time and place for the announcement.

Although Biden has long said that it’s his intention to seek reelection, he has yet to make it official, and he’s struggled to dispel questions about whether he’s too old to continue serving as president. Biden would be 86 at the end of a second term.
