“The jury didn’t convict anyone for engaging in politics, they convicted Mr. Tarrio and others of engaging in seditious conspiracy,” Judge Kelly (Trump) said Tuesday. “I don’t have any indication that he is remorseful for the actual things he is convicted of, which is seditious conspiracy and conspiracy to obstruct the counting of electoral votes.”
Before he was sentenced, Tarrio apologized for the “pain and suffering” that law enforcement, legislators, and others suffered on January 6, and vowed to have “nothing to do with politics, groups, activism or rallies.”“I have always tried to hold myself to a higher standard and I failed,” he said. “I held myself morally above others, and this trial has shown me how wrong I was.”
“I do think the evidence supports the inference that Mr. Tarrio was the ultimate leader [of the conspiracy],” Kelly said. “The people he assembled, the people that were there, again, played critical roles … they played important roles at breach after breach after breach.”
“It is kind of hard to put into words how important that peaceful transfer of power is. Our country was founded as an experiment in self-government by the people but it cannot long endure if the way we elect our leaders is threatened with force and violence,” Judge Kelly said Tuesday. “What happened that day didn’t honor our founders. It was the kind of thing they wrote the Constitution to prevent.”
