The Biggest Political Losers of 2023

Salon.com uses McCarthy’s farewell speech as a prime example of going out a loser “Do not be fearful you could lose your job,” is where this speech, it turns out, was actually heading. This time, I had to pause just to catch my breath, lest I break a vein laughing. The defining impetus of McCarthy’s career was a fear of losing the job he so badly wanted. It’s why he groveled before Trump and made deals with odious backstabbers like Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla. It’s why McCarthy endured the humiliation of 15 votes on the House floor before he finally squeaked out his role as speaker. It’s why he agreed to the ridiculous condition of allowing a single member to call a vote for his ouster, handing a loaded gun to the members of his party most eager to fire it.

Says Salon’s reporting: “For if there was one quality that most people will remember about the congressman from Bakersfield, it was his fearfulness. Donald Trump sent a qqmurderous mob after McCarthy and the rest of Congress. Those who do not fear would take a stand after their near-murder. Yet all McCarthy could do was slither on his belly to kiss Trump’s feet.

ll Newsweek added Joe Biden to the list of Political Losers saying, “Including Joe Biden on this list is likely to be controversial as in some ways the president had quite a good year. He is the overwhelming favorite to be the Democrats’ presidential candidate again in 2024, facing a challenge from only fringe figures within his party, and is overseeing an economy that by the standards of major Western nations is performing strongly.

However, Biden’s approval ratings have continued to fall, with just 37.8 percent of Americans approving of his performance in office on December 8 while 55.5 percent said they were dissatisfied, according to an FiveThirtyEight analysis. Concerns over Biden’s age remain intense, with an ABCNews/Washington Post poll conducted in May finding that 68 percent of Americans believe he is too old to serve a second term, at the end of which he would be 86.

New York Magazine mentions:

Glenn Youngkin: The establishment darling who’s running out of time.

Eric Adams: The incumbent who’s becoming a turkey.

George Santos: The liar who got expelled

Bob Menendez: The Senate’s indictment king.

The NYMagazine-Intelligencer also gives two “dishonorable mentions” in the loser category, Tim Scott and Gavin Newsom.

And Trump is naturally included for spawning so many losses and is often blamed for the final potential demise of the Republican Party.

Who will be Trump' running mate?
