During a town hall event in Ohio last week, Senate Republican candidate Bernie Moreno questioned why women over 50 care about abortion so much, saying it was a “little crazy” that these women were solely focused on being able to get an abortion.
Moreno said, “Sadly, by the way, there’s a lot of suburban women, a lot of suburban women that are like, ‘Listen, abortion is it. If I can’t have an abortion in this country whenever I want, I will vote for anybody else.’ It’s a little crazy, by the way, but ― especially for women that are like past 50. I’m thinking to myself, ‘I don’t think that’s an issue for you.’”
Moreno’s campaign defended the statement, suggesting it was a joke.
Campaign spox said the comments were meant to target Brown and “members of the left-wing media” that like to “pretend that the only issue that matters to women voters is abortion.”
A Pew Research poll earlier this month showed that abortion rights were “very important” to Kamala Harris supporters, while only a third of MAGAts said the same.
Moreno, 57, is running against Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown in the most expensive race in the cycle, as Republicans try to take back the Senate.
