Sharp elbows and raised voices: Inside Trump’s bumpy transition

His freewheeling team has returned to the patterns of his first term in office — with shouting matches, expulsions from meetings and name-calling.

Donald Trump’s attorney and adviser Boris Epshteyn showed up recently for a meeting about Cabinet picks in the Tea Room at Mar-a-Lago only to find his way blocked.

Transition co-chair Howard Lutnick, CEO of Cantor Fitzgerald, told Epshteyn in front of others that this was not a meeting for him. “We’re not talking legal nominees today,” Lutnick said, according to one person familiar with the exchange.

Truth be told, it does seem kind of silly to have the FBI do background checks on presidential appointees when the president is a convicted criminal and an adjudicated digital rapist.

Trump plans to fire Jack Smith’s team, use DOJ to probe 2020 election

The plans show how president-elect Donald Trump wants to use the Justice Department to address his own personal grievances

President-elect Donald Trump plans to fire the entire team that worked with special counsel Jack Smith to pursue two federal prosecutions against the former president, including career attorneys typically protected from political retribution, according to two individuals close to Trump’s transition.

Trump is also planning to assemble investigative teams within the Justice Department to hunt for evidence in battleground states that fraud tainted the 2020 election, one of the people said.

The proposals offer new evidence that Trump’s intention to dramatically shake up the status quo in Washington is likely to focus heavily on the Justice Department, the nation’s premier law enforcement agency, and that at least some of his agenda is fueled not by ideology or policy goals but personal grievance.
