On his social media platform, ‘Truth’ Social, The Fascist Guy warned Senate Republicans not to fast track a final batch of President Biden’s nominees through the Senate before adjourning later this week because he has the bigliest mandate in 129 years; he does not.
Senate Majority Leader, Chuck Schumer, will lose his position when the new Congress is sworn in next month and the GQP will hold the majority. Before Thanksgiving, Schumer cut a deal with Republicans to fast-track the approval of nine federal district court judges. But in a concession to Republicans, he agreed to shelve four of Biden’s circuit-court nominees, who Democrats later said likely wouldn’t have had enough votes to win confirmation.
The Senate so far has confirmed 233 of Biden’s judicial nominees, the same number of such nominees it confirmed during Trump’s first term.
Other judges have decided to change their retirement plans because of the incoming administration and a Republican controlled Senate.
Legal experts said judges have discretion to decide when to retire, and while walk-backs are rare, it’s become increasingly common to hinge those decisions on who’s in the White House to pick their successors and in the Senate to confirm them.
Judge James Wynn, an appointee of former President Obama on the 4th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, on Friday reversed his decision to retire from active service on the bench and assume “senior status,” which is when a judge serves in a semi-retired capacity, creating a vacancy for their seat to be filled.
The announcement came after President Biden’s intended replacement for Wynn’s seat withdrew his nomination once it became apparent he would not receive Senate confirmation.
Although TFG would like for us to believe his outrageous lie that he has the largest mandate in 129 years, it is simply untrue.
Trump claims a ‘massive’ mandate, but presidents often overread their victories
In his interview with Time magazine, The Fascist Guy claimed the following:
"[T]he beauty is that we won by so much. The mandate was massive."
"America has given us an unprecedented and powerful mandate."
"Somebody had 129 years in terms of the overall mandate."
Fact Check: UNTRUE!
Although TFG easily won the Electoral College vote, his 312 electoral votes and 49.7% in the popular vote are nowhere near the most in 129 years. His electoral vote tally is the highest since 2012 when former President Barack Obama won 332.
And while Trump is the first Republican in 20 years to win the popular vote, it’s hard to claim a “mandate” when a president gets less than 50%, as TFG did in this election. In fact, TFG’s popular-vote margin was the second-narrowest in the last 60 years.
For Trump, his narrow majorities may limit the sweep of what he’s able to accomplish legislatively. He will undoubtedly try to do what he can within an expanding scope of presidential power, but for lasting societal change, a president needs Congress.
