WASHINGTON — Democratic lawmakers led by Sen. Chris Van Hollen say they are willing to go to El Salvador to seek the release of a man who the Justice Department says it mistakenly deported there — a plan that has gained steam after the country’s president said during a visit to the White House that he would not send the man back to the U.S.
Van Hollen, D-Md., sent a letter Monday to El Salvador’s ambassador in the U.S. requesting a meeting with the country’s president, Nayib Bukele, who said in meeting with President Donald Trump later in the day that he “of course” would not send Kilmar Abrego Garcia, a Maryland resident, back to the U.S.

Apart from the thrum of traffic, it’s a quiet afternoon in this town of roughly 6,000 along the southwest border where the Trump administration has deployed some 10,000 active-duty soldiers – a move that’s part of the president’s campaign promise to stop irregular crossings into the United States.
“I feel like they’re basically turning this place into a military zone, or a wanna-be conflict zone when in reality it isn’t,” said local resident Anibal Galindo of the deployment.
Galindo, who grew up here, says the region already has a strong law enforcement presence, from local and state police to the U.S. Border Patrol and other federal agencies, along with surveillance towers, traffic checkpoints and a large blimp the government says can detect a “suspicious” low-flying aircraft within a 200-mile range.

The request from Trump’s business comes days after his administration released a raft of new seasonal work visas, fulfilling a request from a group that held a fundraiser at another Trump resort less than two weeks earlier.

Indiana mom brought gun to grade school and threatened lesbian teacher, police say
Carrie Rivers, 48, was allegedly unhappy with her daughter’s assignment about flags, a teacher, who keeps a pride flag with the phrase “be kind” on it in class, told police.
An angry Indiana mother is facing multiple charges after allegedly bringing a gun to her daughter’s elementary school and threatening the sixth grader’s lesbian teacher to “kiss ur kids goodbye” after she gave an assignment about flags, officials said Tuesday.
Carrie Rivers, 48, was arrested and charged with possession of a firearm on school property and harassment in connection with the incident at Valley Mills Elementary School in Indianapolis.
Rivers threatened her daughter’s teacher over “a work assignment that had to do with same-sexuality relationships,” according to an affidavit supporting the woman’s arrest.
