Early Sunday morning, a mass shooting occurred in the city’s historic Oregon District near the Ned Pepper’s bar at approximately 1AM. At this time, ten people have been confirmed dead, including the shooter, and 26 people injured.
Dayton Mayor Nan Whaley suggested the death toll would’ve been much higher if police had not been in the neighborhood at that time.
“The officers were there less than a minute from the beginning of the shooting. The shooter was able to kill nine people and injure 26 in less than a minute,” mayor Nan Whaley said during a news conference.
“If we did not have police in the Oregon District … what we could have had in this city …,” she added.”
She also said the alleged gunman used a .223-caliber high capacity magazine rifle, wore body armor and had additional magazines with him.
At this time, authorities do not know the shooter’s motive.
We will update this story as more information becomes available.
