At the Urban and Housing Development office in San Francisco, HUD Secretary Ben Carson claimed that ‘big, hairy men want to infiltrate women’s homeless shelters .
Two staffers claim he also said that society no longer “seemed to know the difference between men and women, “which caused one woman to walk out during his comments.
Carson has a past of making derogatory comments against transgender people.
- He has referred to transgender people as “abnormal” and unfit to serve in the military.
- He has weakened Obama-era protections for transgender people, saying he believes in equal rights, not “special rights.”
- In May, the agency introduced a proposal that would allow federally funded shelters to deny people admission on religious grounds or force transgender women to share bathrooms and sleeping quarters with men.
