Trump-appointed Federal Judge Carl Nichols ordered Steve Bannon to report to jail by July 1 to begin serving his four-month sentence for his Contempt of Congress conviction, after refusing to comply with a January 6 Select Committee subpoena.
Bannon was found guilty in July 2022, but his sentence, handed down in October of 2022, was put on hold while he appealed his case.
Judge Nichols said Bannon may appeal to the full appeals court or the Supreme Court, but Nichols said he did not believe that the “original basis” for his stay of the imposition of Bannon’s sentence existed any longer.
Bannon smiled as he went through security to enter the courthouse Thursday morning. A person nearby said “Trump ‘24!” to him and Bannon smiled and shook his hand.
When the judge laid down his ruling, Bannon continued to smile and appeared calm. But his lawyer, David Schoen, was not calm.
Judge Nichols: “One thing you have to learn as a lawyer is that when the judge has made his decision, you don’t stand up and start yelling,” adding through Schoen’s protests: “I’ve had enough.”
