Bluesky adds 700,000 new members as users flee X after the US election
Social media platform has become a ‘refuge’ from the far-right activism on X, experts say, after Elon Musk teamed up with Donald Trump
Social media platform Bluesky has picked up more than 700,000 new users in the week since the US election, as users seek to escape misinformation and offensive posts on X.
The influx, largely from North America and the UK, has helped Bluesky reach 14.5 million users worldwide, up from 9 million in September, the company said.
Social media researcher Axel Bruns said the platform offered an alternative to X, formerly Twitter, including a more effective system for blocking or suspending problematic accounts and policing harmful behaviour.

In Trump’s mass deportation plan, the private prison industry sees a lucrative opportunity
As the government and law enforcement brace for the sweeping ramifications of President-elect Donald Trump’s pledge to deport what could be millions of undocumented immigrants from the United States, another stakeholder appears poised to cash in on the complex logistics that would be required: the powerful private prison industry.
On corporate earnings calls since Election Day, executives at the country’s top private prison firms have embraced Trump’s immigration agenda as a potential windfall if the federal government requires contractors to construct new detention facilities and provide additional support services for the unprecedented effort.
Geo Group founder George Zoley, whose company is the country’s largest private prison operator, told investors last week that Trump’s deportation plans represent a “potential sea change” for the industry.

Trump taps Musk to lead a ‘Department of Government Efficiency’ with Ramaswamy
President-elect Donald Trump has tapped Elon Musk and Vivek Ramaswamy to head what he’s calling the “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) — an acronym that is an apparent wink to the dog-themed cryptocurrency by the same name that started as a joke and skyrocketed after Musk promoted it.
Trump made the announcement in a statement Tuesday evening, indicating DOGE and its leadership, Musk and Ramaswamy, will focus on regulating government spending.
While it is not yet clear whether this entity will exist within the federal government or outside, an official government agency cannot be created without an act of Congress.
