As we close the book on a January that saw nearly 100,000 American covid deaths, the United States IS IN A RACE WITH THE NEW COVID STRAINS to get enough Americans vaccinated to prevent another terrible surge for the spring, and health care experts are split on how to do that.

Final Tally for January:

  • 6.269 million new American covid cases
  • 97,898 covid deaths in America
  • we averaged over 202,000 new cases per day for the month
  • we averaged 3,158 deaths per day for the month

Compare that 97,898 death toll with the previous 4 months

As of now, the models suggest our February death toll will also be around 100,000.

In the last 7 day week, we have averaged the following:

  • 151,537 new cases per day (trending down sharply)
  • 3,258 new deaths per day (trending fairly flat)

  • America’s average positive test rate is 8.1%
  • 17 states + DC have a positive test rate of 5% or less
  • 19 states have a positive test rate of 10% or higher
  • 7 states have a positive test rate of 20% or higher
