The US Geological Survey says that the likelihood of casualties are high after a 7.2 magnitude earthquake struck near Haiti on Saturday.
Heavy damage was reported in at least two cities.
A tsunami threat that had been issued for the region has passed, according to the US Tsunami Warning System, but Haiti is in the pathway of Tropical Storm Grace, which could have an impact on Monday and Tuesday.
In 2010, a 7.0 magnitude earthquake left 220,000 and 300,000 people dead and injured hundreds of thousands more.
