Texas Governor Greg Abbott (A-Butt) scored a big win in keeping kids unsafe at school. The Texas Supreme Court blocked “a lower-court orders that had allowed Dallas and San Antonio to impose mask mandates in defiance of an executive order by Gov. Greg Abbott.” Several localities defied A-Butt’s executive order and imposed wearing masks while indoors as the Delta “variant has produced a sharp rise in COVID-19 infections, overrunning intensive care units in adult and children’s hospitals across Texas.” Several school districts will continue to require that kids wear masks, regardless of the Court’s ruling, because they are outside of the Dallas and San Antonio areas.
Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton will continue to challenge local mask mandates as illegal under the governor’s emergency powers during a declared disaster. Those challenges remain before the Supreme Court and are expected to be decided later.
