What you need to know:
The convention will be held from Monday, Aug. 19, until Thursday, Aug. 22, with televised speeches and floor activity happening each night in prime time. Convention programming will be aired from the United Center in Chicago live from 6:15 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET on Monday, and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. ET for all other days.
- The United Center has a capacity of more than 20,000. and is home to the Chicago Bulls and the Chicago Blackhawks. Only credentialed delegates and alternates, as well as guests and members of the news media, can attend in person.
- Separate daytime programming that is open to the public, dubbed “DemPalooza,” will take place at the McCormick Place convention center, about five miles from the United Center.
On Monday, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson will welcome Democrats to the host city, with the them “For the People.” President Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden are expected to speak on Monday, as well as Hillary Clinton.
On Tuesday with the theme “A Bold Vision for America’s Future,” former President Barack Obama and First Gentleman Doug Emhoff are among the expected speakers. Illinois Governor JB Pritzger will give the welcome speech. Also expect members of all 57 delegations to deliver remarks and cast ceremonial votes for Harris and Walz.
On Wednesday, a “A Fight for Our Freedoms” theme will feature V.P. nominee Tim Walz, as he delivers his acceptance speech, preceded by former President Bill Clinton, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.
And “For Our Future,” on Thursday, Vice President Harris accepts the convention’s nomination for president. For those in Chicago who cannot get into the United Center to watch Harris’s nomination speech, the nonprofit GoChiLife is planning a watch party that night at Soldier Field, home to the Chicago Bears, which can hold more than 60,000.
Other speakers expected:
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, Michelle Obama, and Jason Carter, grandson of President Jimmy Carter.
The official live stream of the convention will be at DemConvention.com, as well as on YouTube, X, TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, Twitch and Prime Video. Online influencers will also likely host unofficial convention-related content to their channels throughout the week.
