A shooting spree at a Siberian military base has left eight Russian soldiers dead. According to a Russian investigative committee, a suspect allegedly opened fire killing two officers and six enlisted men at a military garrison near the city of Chita. The shooting happened around 6:20pm local time during a change in guard shift.
A suspect in the case, Private Ramil Shamsutdinov, has been detained, and an investigation is underway.
A system of pervasive hazing was once common in the Russian and Soviet militaries, and bullied soldiers sometimes turned their weapons on colleagues. Such cases are relatively rarer today.
