Bernie Madoff claims he’s dying; seeks early release from prison

Just 7 months after he asked president Trump to reduce his sentence, “Ponzi scheme king Bernie Madoff” has filed a request for an early prison release citing terminal kidney disease.

A lawyer for Madoff, in a new legal filing Wednesday, says the fraudster has “less than 18 months to live,” and is suffering from “numerous other serious medical conditions” including cardiovascular disease and hypertension.

Madoff, 81, currently is serving a 150-year prison sentence in a North Carolina federal facility for orchestrating the largest Ponzi scheme in history, to which he pleaded guilty in 2009.

CNBC:

In phone interviews with The Washington Post, Madoff expressed remorse for his massive fraud, in which he swindled investors out of billions, and said his dying wish is to salvage relationships with his grandchildren.

“I’m terminally ill,” Madoff said. “There’s no cure for my type of disease. So, you know, I’ve served. I’ve served 11 years already, and, quite frankly, I’ve suffered through it.”
