Meet the 172 Republicans who voted against the Violence Against Women Act

Back in 1990 when President Biden was a US Senator, he introduced the Violence Against Women Act that always had bipartisan support up until recently. In 2018, the House approved the Act but of course, it died in the GOP controlled Senate.

On Wednesday, reauthorization of the bill came up for vote in the House and passed by 244-172. Twenty nine Republicans “broke with their party to support the bill, which offered women protections from domestic violence, sexual assault and other harassment.” The bill now heads to the Senate, which will require at least ten Republicans to vote for it before moving to its final step, President Joe Biden’s desk for signature.

After the bill passed the House, President Biden released a statement urging the Senate to do the right thing: “This should not be a Democratic or Republican issue — it’s about standing up against the abuse of power and preventing violence.”

Although many provisions in the Violence Against Women Act have widespread bipartisan support, “such as state grants for sexual assault and domestic violence services, and offers of housing assistance for victims of domestic abuse,” Republicans do not support “several new or expanded measures in the bill, including the closure of the so-called “boyfriend loophole.” The closure of the loophole would extend the ban on abusers being allowed to own or buy a firearm.”
