An eerie copycat of the January 6 insurrection is happening in Brazil.
Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro breached the country’s Congress, Supreme Court and presidential offices on Sunday to protest what they falsely believe was a stolen election.
Bolsonaro fled to Florida following the inauguration of a new president on January 1, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro had fueled incessant attacks against Brazil’s elections.
Dozens of protesters streamed into offices in the Capitol building, moving in with barricades against police, and building additional barricades with chairs once inside. Outside the offices, protesters struck a police officer on horseback and pulled him off the horse.
About 5:30 p.m. local time, less than three hours after the storming, security forces seemed to be regaining control of the presidential palace and Supreme Court’s surroundings, while thousands of protesters remained around Congress and on its roof.
The damage is far worse than what happened in Washington.
