11 years ago, the Sandy Hook School Shooting, December 14, 2012. 20 children ages seven and under, and six school employees. He then killed himself. Earlier in the day, he had killed his mother at home before ever coming to school.
We call this an anniversary, but a better word might be “consecration” or “requiem” or “lament” — because Sandy Hook was so beyond comprehension that many of us were convinced that now, FINALLY, an appalled America would do something to fix the gun disaster that America has become. These were little kids, shot by another kid, enough is enough.
Families broken and potential lost. A Lament that we can hear but makes no difference. Sandy Hook told us 11 years ago the truth we’ve been facing ever since — We failed the Constitution and it failed us; we aren’t now and weren’t then the people or the country those children were hearing about in school.
