Conservatives shell long-standing White House Easter egg contest

NBC is reporting that conservatives once again showed their disdain for children, fun, art and education by adding their own shade to an already rainy Easter Egg Roll at the White House. “President Biden and First Lady Jill Biden hosted the annual White House Easter Egg Rollon Monday, a tradition that dates back to 1878.” (Axios)

“Several conservative outlets did not joke around this weekend when covering the White House‘s annual Easter celebrations, accusing it of banning religious themes from the annual children’s egg decorating contest — even though that guidance predated the Biden administration, according to the first lady’s office. 

A flyer circulated by the adjutants general of the National Guard inviting children of National Guard members to submit Easter eggs to the White House contest is the source of the controversy, with outlets like Fox News and The Daily Caller writing stories saying the administration is banning religious themes in this year’s contest.”

According to CNN‘s reporting, “

Yet political polarization has threatened to overshadow the festive, family-friendly event as Republicans railed against the White House for commemorating Transgender Day of Visibility on Easter Sunday, even though the day is observed annually on March 31. GOP lawmakers in leadership positions, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, called the presidential proclamation “appalling” as the White House fired back against what it cast as “cruel, hateful, and dishonest rhetoric.”

Each year, souvenir wooden eggs are given to children attending the Easter Egg Roll at the White House. These commemorative eggs are also made available for purchase online as a 5-piece set. The 2024 eggs have a rabbit reading a book on the front and the White House with POTUS and FLOTUS signatures on the back. The special Biden Blue egg features First Pets Commander and Willow.

Republicans also seized upon guidelines that prohibit religious symbols at the event, though the head of the American Egg Board said such regulations have been in place for years and apply only to painted eggs inside the White House that are part of an installation designed by military children.
